Zed is a mid-lane attack damage assassin. He is a melee champion that can struggle a lot in the early game when trying to walk up and last hit minions. Once you hit level 5 and get Death Mark (Ultimate), you can look to get a solo kill on the enemy or roam around the map with his aggressive playstyle. The main thing to note is that when you active Death Mark, you have a small time frame when it won't do any damage. This is your window to deal as much damage as you can to the enemy with your attacks and abilities. The more damage you do while the champion is marked, the more damage the ultimate will do at the end.
With Zed being an attack damage-focused champion, he does really well when you build attack damage. Zed also benefits a lot from armor penetration and ability haste so his ultimate is up and available sooner. Youmuu's Ghostblade and Duskblade of Draktharr are great items for Zed. It gives him attack damage and ability haste that he needs. Also, both the passives are great. Ghostblade gives him more movement speed when roaming around the map and Duskblade has a slow effect when he is unseen.
For runes, we have the following:
There are many combos with Zed when using his Living Shadow (2nd Ability) to proc the Electrocute damage which will help you especially in the early game trades.
Good way to get some extra damage that can help at all stages of the game, especially early game which is where Zed struggles.
With Zed you will be in a lot of fights and get plenty of takedowns, especially if you use your ultimate around your teammates. This allows Zed to get a bit more health with each takedown to make him that little bit extra tanky.
You want your Death Mark (Ultimate) and other abilities to be up and available as much as possible to deal a lot of damage. Hunter Genius will give you extra ability haste when you get unique takedowns on enemies.
Zed struggles a bit in the early game as a melee champion. Most of the time you want to stay back and wait for the enemy champion to push the minion wave under your tower. You can use your Living Shadow (2nd Ability) in combination with your 1st and 3rd abilities to farm from a distance. Just make sure you don't press the 2nd ability a 2nd time or you will travel to your shadow, if you do this you can take a lot of damage and be in trouble. Once you hit level 5 this is where you can potentially look for the all-in and try and kill the enemy mid-lane. If you can't find the opportunity in the mid lane, you can try to roam around the map and use your Ultimate in the side lanes.
When you reach the mid and late game and get a few items, this is where Zed can start to become useful since you have quite a lot of mobility and damage that the enemy team has to try and deal with. The best thing you can do is try and look for a solo kills on the enemy team. Try to hide in a bush and wait for the enemy carries to walk near you. This is when you can use your Ultimate and try to get an early advantage in a team fight. When you are grouped with your team and about to have a team fight, the best thing you want to do is get to their backline where you can kill the enemy carries.
Overall Zed is a very fun and mobile champion to play with the ability to out-play the enemy team and deal a lot of damage to a single target and potentially turn a team fight around.
