How to play Sona

Sona is an enchanter Support champion. She excels at healing and buffing your team to keep them alive as well as having a huge Ultimate that can stun the whole enemy team. Her early laning phase can be pretty rough because you will be spamming abilities a lot and will get quite low on mana, so make sure you keep an eye on that. You also need to be careful if the enemy bot lane engages, because you don't have a lot of health and can die really quickly. The later the game goes, the better Sona gets. Her heals become even stronger and you will have pretty much-unlimited mana to spam all your abilities.

Sona Build Breakdown

Archangel's Staff
Ardent Censer
Harmonic Echo
Rabadon's Deathcap
Protector's Vow
Ionian Boots of Lucidity - Redeeming

Sona does best with support items that give her heals and shields more power. Archangel's Staff is a unique item for Sona when it comes to supports. Early on, Sona can really struggle with mana so this helps out a lot when spamming your abilities and scales really well into the late game, giving her more mana so you won't have to worry about being low. Ardent Censer is a go-to and must-buy on Sona. Not only do you get a bit of health and ability power, but the passive is the important part. When you heal an ally, they gain bonus attack speed and deal more damage. This is great with Sona's Aria of Perseverance (2nd Ability) as it has an area of effect and can heal multiple allies.

With runes, we have the following:

Aery

This gives Sona's heal an extra shield on top of the rune and also allows you to deal that little bit extra damage which is nice for early game trades in the laning phase.

Brutal

Good way to get some extra ability power that can help at all stages of the game, especially early game when you are trading and fighting the enemy bot lane.

Regeneration

Sona can struggle a bit with mana issues especially in the early game when poking down the enemy and healing her allies. Regeneration can help by regenerating mana over time.

Manaflow Band

With Hymn of Valor (1st Ability) being an easy spell to poke down and hit the enemy, it's really easy to get stack on this rune to gain more mana which helps a lot as the game goes on.

Flash
Heal

For summoner spells, Flash is a must on most champions. It's a great spell to get you out of a bad situation or allows you to flash and save your ally or even maybe get a kill. Heal works great as the 2nd summoner spell choice if your AD Carry takes Barrier, however, if your bot lane partner also takes Heal, it is really bad for you to also go Heal because you don't get the full effect. If this happens, then change Heal to Ignite to help kill the enemies.

Early Game

Sona does ok in the early game, you can poke the enemy with Hymn of Valor (1st Ability) and you can heal your AD carry with Aria of Perseverance (2nd Ability) if they are low on HP so you can survive and stay in lane longer. Always keep an eye on your mana and make sure you don't waste your abilities so you run out. You have to be very careful when stepping forward as if you get caught out and engaged on you can die very quickly.

Late Game

The later the game goes, the stronger Sona gets as her shields and heals get better with more items. You can use your Crescendo (Ultimate) to engage on the enemies, but make sure you always stay back and heal your team. It is really important as a support that you stay with your team and help them during team fights. Prioritize staying back and keeping your carries alive, protecting them against the enemy team using everything possible to keep them healthy. The AD Carry in your team is one of the main damage sources and keeping he/her alive is really important!

Conclusion

Sona is quite an easy champion to play but does have an Ultimate that is a game-changer. She is great at keeping your team alive and can pressure a lot in the laning phase to give your Dragon Lane partner a lot of breathing space.
