How to Play Smolder

Smolder is a marksman who can be played in the Duo Lane or Mid Lane. Smolder can provide all the damage your team needs just by himself and his Super Scorcher Breath, but only if the game reaches late enough for you to get 150 stacks. Reaching 150 stacks is the ultimate goal for Smolder giving your Super Scorcher Breath a mini elder dragon effect (true damage and executing low health enemies). Because of Smolder's incredible late game, he has one of the weakest early games among the Marksman. Your main goal is to play safe, kill minions and poke enemy champions with Super Scorcher Breath to get as many stacks as possible.

Make sure to check the alternative build at the top of the page for playing Smolder in the Mid Lane.

Smolder's Abilities

Dragon Practice
(Passive)

Hitting enemy champions with abilities and killing enemies/minions with Super Scorcher Breath grants a stack of Dragon Practice, which improves and upgrades Smolder's basic abilities based on the number of stacks you have.

Super Scorcher Breath deals additional magic damage and gains new effects at 20,85 and 150 stacks.

Achooo! explosions deal additional magic damage.

Flap Flap Flap deals additional magic damage with each hit, and Smolder gains an extra bolt every 65 stacks.

When playing Smolder you always want to maximize the number of stacks you get throughout the game. This means reducing the number of times you last hit minions with auto attacks and using Super Scorcher Breath instead. Also, whenever possible, you should always look to use your abilities on enemies to gain as many stacks as possible.

Super Scorcher Breath
(1)

Smolder fires a fireball, dealing damage. If the target dies, mana is refunded.

20 stacks: Fireball explodes and damages nearby enemies to the target.

85 stacks: Sends explosions behind the target that deal 50% damage.

150 stacks: Burns the target, dealing true damage over a few seconds. Enemy champions that drop low on health while burning are killed instantly.

Super Scorcher Breath is Smolder's main damage ability. It works like an auto attack applying on-shit effects and scales with Critical Strike Damage. You want to get 150 stacks as soon as possible. Try to aim for around 13 minutes. This is around the time when a huge team fight will happen around Dragon or Baron, so you'll need the burn and execute to carry in the fight.

Achooo!
(2)

Smolder lets out a flaming sneeze, dealing damage and slowing enemies for a shot while.

Hitting champions causes an explosion, dealing more damage. Smolder gains 1 stack of Dragon Practice per champion hit.

Achooo should never be used for damage and doesn't deal as much as Super Scorcher Breath. Use Achooo for its slow and to poke enemies early on to get more stacks towards Smolder's passive. Achooo can go through minions and hit champions behind, making it pretty easy to hit early on.

Flap, Flap, Flap
(3)

Smolder flies, gaining movement speed and ignoring terrain for just over a second.

While flying, you automatically lock onto the lowest Health enemy in range and bombard them a few times. Each hit deals damage.

Flap, Flap, Flap is Smolder's main movement ability that can help you get out of danger quickly. I'd suggest not using this for damage and instead save it for when you need to escape any threat.

MMOOOMMMM!
(Ultimate)

Smolder's Mom breathes fire from above dealing damage to enemies in a wide range. Enemies in the center take more damage and are slowed for a few seconds. Smolder heals if he is hit. This Ultimate does not scale with Smolder's Passive Dragon Practice. Use MMOOOMMMM at the start of teamfights to benefit more from the slow, so you can get in range to deal all your damage with Super Scorcher Breath.

Smolder Build Breakdown

Essence Reaver
Magnetic Blaster
Mortal Reminder
Infinity Edge
Bloodthirster
Gluttonous Greaves - Galeforce

Essence Reaver synergises well with Smolder's Kit. When using Super Scorcher Breath, you'll get the Spellblade passive, meaning it'll deal more damage. Also, Mana Siphon's restore Mana means you have more opportunities to use Super Scorcher Breath throughout a fight.

Magnetic Blaster increases the range of Super Scorcher Breath and gives it more damage.

Infinity Edge increases Smolder's Critical Damage from his auto attacks and Super Scorcher Breath giving you a huge powerspike.

Onto the Runes, we have:

Fleet Footwork

There aren't many options for Smolder. Fleet footwork's movement speed and health regen help during the laning phase so that you can get more stacks on Dragon Practice.

Gathering Storm

Since Smolder is a late game champion Gathering Storm will increase Smolder's attack damage in the Mid/Late game, helping improve the damage from Super Scorcher Breath.

Coup de Grace

Coup de Grace provides additional damage that helps burst enemies when they are low on health.

Giant Slayer is another good option when playing against bruisers and tanks that build a lot of health.

Legend: Bloodline

Smolder doesn't need attack speed from Alacrity, so the healing from Bloodline is more beneficial.

Bone Plating

Bone Plating is an excellent choice for surviving all-ins from enemy champions. As the carry for your team, you'll get a lot of focus from the enemies.

Flash
Barrier

Flash is a must-have Summoner Spell. Use it to dodge skillshots and escape enemies. You can even flash forward to finish off enemies with Super Scorcher Breath.

Barrier is great for survivability especially during the early game where Smolder is the weakest. Making sure you can stay alive to farm more for your passive Dragon Practice.

Early Game

Early Game is where Smolder is at his weakest point. You want to play passively and try not to die so you can farm up and last hit minions with Super Scorcher Breath to start stacking your passive Dragon Practice. Only walk up when you are in range to use Smolder's abilities to deal damage to the enemies to get more stacks. Otherwise, don't risk dying and use Flap, Flap, Flap.

Late Game

Smolder is the ultimate late-game carry. With Magnetic Blaster and Super Scorcher Breath, you should be able to poke enemies from afar to set up fights. Being able to chuck enemies before teamfights is pivotal, as it can set your team up for success. Your goal is to do as much damage as possible while keeping yourself safe. Try to stay with your team as much as possible. If you are caught alone and die, then that's a lot of damage that your team will be missing out on.

Conclusion

Smolder is the ultimate late-carry carry that has one of the highest damage outputs in the game once you get enough stacks from his passive Dragon Practice.
