Jayce is a fighter who can play in the Mid Lane or Solo Lane. He is a versatile champion who can switch between two forms as early as Level 1. Mercury Cannon is his ranged form, and Mercury Hammer is his melee form. Each form has three separate abilities, meaning he has six abilities available to him at level 3. His kit offers plenty of opportunities for outplaying opponents through his kiting and skillful execution, punishing enemies when they make mistakes.
Make sure to check the alternative build at the top of the page for playing Jayce in the Solo Lane.
Transforming between the Mercury Hammer and Mercury Cannon grants bonus movement speed for just over a second. The cooldown when switching forms can be pretty long at early levels, so make sure you use the correct form at the right time.
Jayce leaps to an enemy, dealing physical damage and slowing nearby enemies for a few seconds.
To The Skies is Jayce's gap-closing ability which allows him to jump onto or closer to the enemy backline by using minions to his advantage. However, this can put you in a dangerous position, and you can take a lot of damage, so make sure you are wary of your surroundings before jumping in.
Jayce fires an orb that detonates on hitting an enemy or reaching the end of its path, dealing physical damage. Orbs fired through an Acceleration Gate travel farther and faster, increasing the damage of Shock Blast by 40%.
Shock Blast is Jayce's main poke ability that can be used to great effect. When finding the right angle, Shock Blast can put enemies low on health before a fight even starts, giving your team a huge advantage.
Passive: Attacks in Melee Form (Mercury Hammer) restore mana.
Active: Jayce releases an electrifying aura, dealing magic damage over a few seconds to nearby enemies.
Lightning Field is best used just after To The Skies, as you will be on top of the enemy when you leap towards them, so you can make the most out of the damage that Lightning Field brings.
Jayce gains a burst of energy, increasing his Attack Speed for three attacks within a few seconds. These attacks also deal additional physical damage.
Hyper Charge is best used when trying to poke enemy champions as it does a lot of damage in such a short amount of time. You can also change form to get the attack speed in melee form instead, which can be beneficial when jumping in with To The Skies.
Jayce knocks a target and enemies near them backwards, dealing magic damage.
Most of the time, you want to save Thundering Blow and only use it to knock enemies away from you when you are in danger, as it doesn't add a lot of damage to his combo. However, you can also use this Ability in combo with Flash to knock the enemy towards your team.
Jayce deploys an Acceleration Gate that grants decaying movement speed for a few seconds to you and allied champions that pass through it. Shock Blasts fired through the gate travel farther and faster, increasing Shock Blasts' damage by 40%.
Acceleration Gate is very effective when you and the team are ready to engage, or can be used to run away when in danger.
Mercury Cannon is Jayce's ranged form. When transformed, Jayce gains new abilities and ranged auto attacks. The next attack with Mercury Cannon is empowered, dealing additional magic damage and reducing the target's Armor and Magic Resist.
For most of the game, Jayce wants to stay in Ranged Form. This will give him a ranged advantage during the laning phase, and he can use Shock Blast and Acceleration Gate to poke enemies in the late game.
Mercury Hammer is Jayce's Melee Form. When transformed, Jayce gains new abilities, Attack Speed, Armor and Magic Resist, and empowers his next attack to deal additional magic damage.
Use Mercury Hammer when you want to jump in and deal a lot of burst damage or when running away to safety.
Manamune gives Jayce a huge amount of mana and a passive that increases his damage based on his mana, helping Jayce stay in fights longer and deal more damage.
Youmuu's Ghostblade is a cheap item that gives Jayce a huge amount of damage and movement speed to help with Jayce's kiting potential and overall damage.
Edge of Night is a great defensive item. It provides a spell shield that can block enemy abilities. It also still gives Jayce Attack Damage and Armor Penetration to increase his overall damage.
For runes we have the following:
First Strike offers true damage and bonus gold. With Jayce's Shock Blast and Acceleration Gate combo, he will always be able to damage enemies first, so when he jumps in with Into The Skies, he'll be able to burst enemies.
With Jayce's early game power having access to so many abilities and being able to turn into a ranged champion, the extra damage from Brutal can help Jayce get a huge advantage early on.
Coup de Grace provides additional damage that helps burst enemies when they are low on health.
Giant Slayer is another good option when playing against bruisers and Tanks that build a lot of health.
Alacrity grants Jayce Attack Speed, enhancing his burst damage with First Strike.
Bone Plating is an excellent choice for surviving all-ins from enemy champions. As the carry for your team, you'll get a lot of focus from the enemies.
Jayce is a very safe but aggressive champion in the early game. At level 3, Jayce has access to 6 abilities, which gives him a huge advantage; however, you'll need to be careful of your mana, as when you use all of these abilities, it costs most of your mana to use. Jayce's long-range poke from his ranged form allows him to poke his opponents and set up kills for himself or his teammates. He's also a strong duelist in his melee form, being able to secure kills after he uses his poke early on.
You want to play as aggressively as possible using both his Ranged and Melee forms to full effect. At level 3 you have 6 abilities available to you. When in ranged form, use Acceleration Gate and Shock Blast to poke down the enemy champion and when they get low enough, you can change to Melee form and use To The Skies to jump on top and deal the killing blow.
In the late game, Jayce becomes one of the strongest carries in the Solo Lane. Using Acceleration Gate and Shock Blast, Jayce can poke enemies early on in a teamfight to give your team a huge advantage, and then, when the time is right, switch to Melee Form and jump in to try and finish off high-value targets. Jayce is best played when sticking with his team and avoiding being caught alone. When your teammates engage, you can follow up and use your abilities to help with damage. Play safely and wait for the right moment to engage, as you'll still be very vulnerable and can die quickly.
Overall, Jayce is a very fun champion to play when mastered. It might take a couple of games to understand his forms but when you do you'll be able to punish enemies and snowball the game so you can carry.
