Twisted Fate is a mage. He is a mid-lane champion that uses his abilities to crowd control, wave clear, and burst the enemies. He excels in single target damage with his Yellow Card from Pick a Card (2nd ability) and using his other spells to deal a lot of damage. When playing Twisted Fate, it's best to play safe before you hit level 5, this is when you unlock Destiny (Ultimate). Twisted Fate's Ultimate is a semi-global Ultimate that you can use across the whole map, this allows you to quickly teleport to the side lanes and get your team an advantage.
Twisted Fate does great with most ability power items. His main source of damage is from all his abilities. It's important to buy Rod of Ages first item, as it stacks over time giving you more health, mana, and ability power every 30 seconds up to 10 times. This means that if you build this item later on, it won't have the same effect and you will need to wait for it to stack. Lich Bane is another great item that helps with Twisted Fate's single target damage. Every time you activate Pick a Card (2nd Ability) you activate the passive Spellblade so your next attack will have increased damage.
With runes, we have the following:
A great way to get that little extra damage with your combo (Pick a Card Stun + Wild Cards + Auto-Attack).
Another great way to get extra ability power damage, especially for the early game when trading with the enemies and clearing the minion waves.
When using abilities, Twisted Fate can get low on mana early on. This rune helps by regening mana or health over time (whichever one is lower).
A great rune for if you get low in the laning phase and need that extra bit of healing and get some free money.
Twisted Fate struggles a bit in the early game. Most of the time you want to stay back and use your Wild Cards (1st Ability) to last hit minions and poke down the enemy. Once you hit level 5 and get access to Destiny (Ultimate), this is your time to shine. Look at the top and bottom lanes and see if you get an opportunity to roam and get kills. This is your best opportunity to get you and your team ahead. Make sure when using Destiny that you have your Gold Card (from Wild Cards) ready to stun the enemies when you arrive.
When you reach the mid and late game and have a few items, this is where Twisted Fate can be very useful. When you are grouped with your team and about to have a team fight, the best thing you want to do is get onto their backline where you can kill the enemy carries. You have a lot of opportunities to lock down the enemy carries and can do a lot of burst damage with your Pick a Card (2nd Ability) and Wild Cards (1st Ability).
Overall Twisted Fate has a lot of potential to roam around and get your team ahead. He doesn't have the best 1 vs 1 potential but if you like to roam around and help your team then he is the go-to champion for you.
