How to play Nocturne

Nocturne is an Assassin who can play in the Jungle. He's a fearsome diver who thrives on aggression and map control. Nocturne's signature ultimate, Paranoia, brings darkness to the Rift, reducing the enemy's sight. During this time, Nocturne can pick off isolated targets and jump to them with insane burst damage. His playstyle revolves around quick decision making and decisive engagements, getting an advantage for your team before a teamfights starts.

Nocturne's Abilities

Umbra Blades
(Passive)

Every 12 seconds, Nocturne's next attack is empowered to strike the target and nearby enemies, dealing physical damage and restoring health per enemy hit. Attacks reduce Umbra Blades' cooldown by 1 second, increased to 3 seconds against champions or monsters in the jungle.

Take advantage of Umbra Blades' AOE damage to clear jungle camps efficiently. Position yourself to hit multiple targets with each empowered auto-attack.

Umbra Blades also enhances Nocturne's dueling power, especially in isolated skirmishes. The bonus damage and healing can turn the duel in your favour and make a big difference.

Duskbringer
(1)

Nocturne throws a shadow claw in a target direction, dealing physical damage and leaving a Dusk Trail in its path for a few seconds. Enemy champions and large monsters hit by the claw also leave a dusk Trail behind when they move. Nocturne gains Attack Damage and Movement Speed on all Dusk Trails.

Duskbringer can be used as an engage tool and a way for Nocturne to escape. The bonus movement speed can help you chase down fleeing enemies or be used when trying to reposition or run away from enemies. When clearing Jungle camps, use Duskbringer in a position where you can benefit from the movement speed to get to the next camp faster.

Shroud of Darkness
(2)

Passive: Nocturne gains Attack Speed

Active: Nocturne creates a shadow barrier for just over a second that blocks the next enemy ability. If an ability is blocked, the passive Attack Speed will be increased and slow nearby enemies for a few seconds.

Shroud of Darkness required timing to block an enemy ability. It's crucial to anticipate when opponents will use their key spells, so pay attention when engaging in teamfights or duels. Shroud of Darkness is very effective against crowd control abilities. Using it to negate incoming crowd control allows you to maintain your ability to move freely.

Unspeakable Horror
(3)

Passive: Nocturne gains Movement Speed towards feared enemies.

Active: Nocturne plants a nightmare into his target's mind, dealing magic damage over a few seconds. If the target does not get out of range by the end of the duration, they are feared and slowed for just over a second.

Unspeakable Horror is a great initiation tool for ganks and teamfights. Targeting the right target is key to disrupting their positioning and making it easier for you to damage them. Combo Unspeakable Horror with Paranoia and Duskbringer to deal maximum burst damage in duels and teamfights.

Paranoia
(Ultimate)

Darkens the map, reducing the vision of all enemy champions and removing their vision of allies. Recast launches himself at an enemy champion, dealing physical damage. Nocturne is unstoppable while launching.

Paranoia's global range allows Nocturne to join fights across the map, making him a constant threat to enemies at all times. Use Paranoia to surprise enemies and secure kills. When activating Paranoia, prioritize isolated or high-priority enemy champions that are squishy and vulnerable to your burst damage.

Nocturne Build Breakdown

Youmuu's Ghostblade
Trinity Force
Mortal Reminder
Edge of Night
Guardian Angel
Gluttonous Greaves - Stasis

Youmuu's Ghostblade gives Nocturne a lot of attack damage and early armor penetration to help with his burst damage. The Movement Speed and Attack Speed also help Nocturne when using Paranoia.

Trinity Force gives Nocturne incredible carry potential. The Spellblade passive can be used with his abilities to help him deal more damage to win in early skirmishes or teamfights.

Mortal Reminder provides Nocturne with much-needed percent armor penetration to help with his burst damage and grievous wounds, just in case any healing comes out from enemies when trying to survive Nocturne's dive.

Onto the runes, we have:

First Strike

First Strike synergizes well with Nocturne's playstyle. During Paranoia, you'll be the first one dealing damage when jumping in, helping you deal true damage, which is crucial when trying to burst enemy champions.

Gathering Storm

Gathering Storm is the best option from this selection of runes. It helps give Nocturne an increasing amount of attack damage throughout the game.

Coup de Grace

Coup de Grace provides additional damage that helps burst enemies when they are low on health.

Giant Slayer is another good option when playing against bruisers and tanks that build a lot of health.

Legend: Alacrity

Legend Alacrity helps with Nocturne's jungle clear speed, improving his dueling potential and increasing his overall damage in teamfights.

Overgrowth

Overgrowth helps Nocturne gain permanent health throughout the game when killing jungle camps. This will help his survivability in teamfights when jumping in with Paranoia.

Flash
Smite

Flash is a fundamental Summoner Spell. It provides him with crucial mobility and escape options, enabling him to engage or disengage from fights with ease.

As a jungler, you always want to take Smite. Smite will help you clear through the jungle quicker and secure major objectives.

Jungle Path

Nocturne's primary focus is to clear through the jungle as quickly as possible until you reach Level 5. Once you reach Level 5, start looking to impact the Rift with Paranoia. Look to gank lanes that are overextended or have low health enemies. Using Paranoia when available maximizes Nocturne's impact on the game and gives him crucial map control.

This is what the jungle patch would look like:

  1. Blue Sentinel
  2. Gromp
  3. Wolves
  4. Raptors
  5. Red Brambleback
  6. Krugs
  7. Scuttle Crab

Late Game

Nocturne can fall off if you haven't been able to snowball and take advantage of his early aggressive playstyle. In the late game, try to pick off high-priority enemies before fights begin with your Paranoia. Do not try to front-line for your team. You are not a tank. Instead, look for a flank or peel for your backline carries to help them survive. Your main objective as a jungler is to keep track of when Dragon, Rift Herald, and Baron spawn. Taking these epic monsters will give you and your team an advantage in the game.

Conclusion

Nocturne is a scary force in the jungle. Turning the rift into darkness and striking fear into enemies will help you come out on top. Unleashing Nocturne's full potential is all about playing aggressively and taking advantage of enemies' mistakes with Paranoia.
