Garen is a fighter who can play in the Solo Lane. Garen is an incredibly easy champion to play. He has a very simple kit that is easy to execute. His passive, Perseverance, allows for a lot of leniency in lane when you make mistakes. With this, on top of Second Wind, it is nearly impossible to force Garen out of the lane since he'll have so much healing. His ultimate, Demacian Justice, is one of the most powerful execute tools in the game, allowing Garen to get on top of the back line and one-shot them.
If Garen has not been struck by damage or enemy abilities within the last few seconds, he regenerates missing health per second.
This is most effective during the laning phase. This is where Garen can take short trades and then walk away to heal the damage he has taken. Be wary of aoe and damage over time abilities as they will constantly turn off your passive.
Garen breaks free from all slow, becoming immune to them for under a second and gaining movement speed for a few seconds. The next attack, within a few seconds, is empowered to deal physical damage and silence the target for over a second.
Most of the time, you don't want to use this ability to chase down enemies as you won't be able to deal the extra damage and silence them. Instead, use this when in close range between your auto attacks to deal the most damage.
Passive: Garen gains bonus armor and magic resist.
Active: Reduces incoming damage for a few seconds. On cast, Garen gains Tenacity for 1 second and a shield that absorbs damage for over a second.
It's essential to time Courage as soon as you are about to take a lot of damage from a champion or tower and try not to waste it; otherwise, Garen can be pretty vulnerable and take a lot more damage than usual.
Garen rapidly spins his sword for a few seconds, dealing physical damage eight times. Every 4 levels, the number increases up to 11 strikes. Garen can re-cast this ability to stop spinning at any time, reducing the cooldown.
When Garen hits a champions 6 times, the enemy's armor is shredded by 25% for a few seconds. Every hit refreshes the effect duration. The target nearest to Garen takes 20% increased damage.
You can combo Decisive Strike with Judgment to gain movement speed when spinning, making it easier for Garen to stay as close as possible to the enemy.
Garen calls forth the might of Demacia to execute an enemy champion, dealing true damage. Demacian Justice deals more damage the more health the enemy is missing. Nearby enemies also take true damage.
It's essential to note that you should never use Demacian Justice if the enemy is over 50% HP. You will not deal any damage at all, and you will waste the damage potential of your Ultimate.
Black Cleaver synergizes well with Garen's kit, allowing him to deal more damage by reducing the enemy's armour. This stacks on top of Judgement, sometimes reducing the enemy's armour by half.
Divine Sunderer enhances Garen's 1 vs 1 potential and gives him a lot of burst damage with the spellblade passive and Decisive Strike.
Sundered Sky allows Garen to deal critical damage on his auto attacks and Decisive Strike, giving him even more burst damage.
For runes, we have:
Conqueror has an insane interaction with Judgement. Every tick of damage gives him a stack of Conqueror, meaning you can fully stack Conqueror with just a few spins giving you more damage and sustain.
Nullifying Orb helps Garen gain a shield when he is low on health, giving him more time to escape.
Second Wind synergizes extremely well with Garen's passive Perseverance, where you'll be able to heal a lot of health when out of combat.
Overgrowth gives Garen permanent health throughout the game, making him more difficult to kill.
Perseverance is another excellent choice against Crowd Control.
Demolish helps Garen push towers and take tower platings in the early game, which can give him a considerable gold lead that can be used to get a lead in lane or roam around to help the rest of the map.
Garen has a lot of early game strength when looking for the right trades. He has good base damage from his abilities and can take a lot of damage with Courage when timed correctly, which allows you to walk up and start taking short trades. Judgment is a great ability to help Garen push minion waves in the early game, allowing you to roam. At Level 1, Judgment can clear the first minion wave, which enables you to look and invade the enemy jungle to be a nuisance. If you do get low on health, you can walk away, and Perseverance will regenerate a lot of health over time, allowing you to stay in the lane longer.
Garen is a great team fight champion in the late game. You always want to stay with your team and try not to get caught out by yourself. When a team fight happens, you want to ensure you are at the front protecting your team by using Courage to block a lot of high-value abilities. You are a tank with a lot of health and resistance to survive a long time against the enemy team. When looking to fight, always look at the biggest threat on the enemy team. If you can reduce their health low enough, you can use Demacian Justice to execute them and win the fight.
Overall, Garen is a very easy champion to execute. He is an excellent starter champion who has the potential to one-shot enemy carrys with just a few abilities. You are also a huge tank that can survive a lot of damage.
