Garen is a tanky, high damage AD champion. He is capable of making his way through crowds of enemies to kill the most dangerous ones on the enemy team. The main reason for this is Courage which reduces damage taken for a short time, and gains bonus resistance to crown control. He is ok in the early game but the later the game goes the more tanky Garen becomes which means he will be able to run through and kill the enemy team.
If Garen has not been struck by damage or enemy abilities within the last few seconds, he regenerates missing health per second. This makes trading in lane very easy with Garen.
You can walk up to an enemy and fight them for a few seconds then walk away and regenerate all the health back that you lost.
Garen breaks free from all slow, becoming immune to them for just under a second and gaining bonus movement speed for a few seconds. The next attack within a few seconds is empowered to deal physical damage and silence the target for just over a second. Silencing an enemy champion means it cancels any channelling abilities and prevents the target from casting any spells.
Reduce damage taken for a few seconds. For the first second the damage reduction is higher than the rest of the duration and Garen gains Tenacity. This means that all crowd control towards Garen is reduced. It's important to time this ability correctly as soon as you are about to take a lot of damage.
Garen rapidly spins in a bladestorm for a few seconds, dealing physical damage 8 times. Enemies hit by the bladestorm's outer edge are critically struck for increased damage.
Garen can re-cast this ability at any time to stop spinning at any point. This is really helpful when enemies dash away from the area of the spin so you can use other abilities instead.
You can combo Decisive Strike (1st Ability) with Judgment to gain movement speed when spinning around.
Garen calls forth the might of Demacia to execute an enemy champion, dealing true damage. Demacian Justice deals more damage depending on how much health the enemy is missing. Nearby enemies also take true damage and the damage is increased depending on how much health they are missing.
It's really important to note that you should never use Demacian Justice if the enemy is over 50% HP. You will not deal a lot of damage at all and you will waste your ultimate.
Garen is known as a solo front-line tank that can survive a lot of damage. Black Cleaver is a strong item that gives Garen a bit of damage whilst also giving him some tank stats to help him survive. Black Cleaver's passives also work great with Garen's kit. You can reduce the enemy's armor when dealing physical damage which boosts Garen's damage output even more, and you also gain movement speed when auto-attacking which helps Garen chase down the enemy. Hullbreaker is a really strong item for Garen when you are ahead and if you are looking to split push for the rest of the game.
For runes, we have:
You can walk up to enemy champions using Courage and with help from your passive to get the auto-attack off on the enemy to start stacking the extra health that can help a lot in the mid and late-game.
When Garen gets a champion takedown he restores a % of his health (which is normally a lot) and he deals a % more damage to enemies that are low on health which makes his Ultimate even stronger.
Second Wind helps Garen during the laning phase. It allows him to heal up so he can stay in the lane longer and also works well with his passive, Perseverance.
Demolish works well with champions that love to split push and build Hullbreaker like Garen. Demolish helps you push and destroy towers very quickly which can give you and your team a huge advantage.
Garen does ok in the early game. He has good base damage and a lot of defensives with Courage which allows you to walk up and start stacking Grasp of the Undying. Decisive Strike also gives you a burst of movement speed and stops all slows that you have been hit by. This is another great way to trade against the enemy champion or escape from a bad situation. If you do get low on health don't be afraid because Perseverance will regen a lot of health over time which allows you to stay in lane longer.
Garen is a great team fight champion in the late game. You want to stay with your team at all times and try not to get caught out by yourself. When a team fight happens you want to make sure you are at the front protecting your team. You are a tank that has a lot of health and a lot of resistance to survive a long time against the enemy team. Make sure you always go towards the biggest threat on the enemy team and try to kill them.
Overall Garen is a very easy and great starter champion for anyone that wants to practice playing in the top lane. You are a big tank that can survive a lot of damage and carry your team.
