How to play Leona

Leona is a support champion. She excels at engaging with her heavy crowd control abilities and being that front-line tank for your team. With Leona, you can combo a lot of abilities to chain crowd control for a long amount of time. The most common combo that works really well especially early game is Zenith Blade then once you travel to the enemy you can use Shield of Daybreak to stun the enemy for a long period of time. Leona works great at all stages of the game getting stronger when the game gets later as you can buy more tank items to survive longer.

Leona Build Breakdown

Dead Man's Plate
Warmog's Armor
Amaranth Twinguard
Thornmail
Randuin's Omen
Plated Steelcaps - Gargoyle

Leona does amazing with tank items that can help her survive longer when engaging in team fightsDead Man's Plate is a great first item for Leona; the movement speed helps her a lot when trying to get in range to use Zenith Blade. Another great item for Leona is Warmog's Armor, a huge tank item that gives her a great amount of health and health regeneration, so if you do get low on health you can go out of combat and heal back up before looking to go in for another fight.

With runes, we have the following:

Aftershock

Leona's Shield of Daybreak, Zenith Blade, and Solar Flare abilities all have the potential to immobilize the enemy which means it's really easy to get the extra resistances from aftershock to stay alive for longer.

Weakness

Same as Aftershock, it's really easy to immobilize the enemies. With Weakness, this will make the enemy champion you immobilize take more damage.

Bone Plating

Since Leona loves to engage and is generally at the front during team fights she will take a lot of damage. Bone plating will help Leona take reduced damage from the first three instances of damage.

Hunter Genius

Leona loves to engage and get involved in team fights, and she will get a lot of takedowns. After every unique takedown, Leona gets Ability Haste so she can use her combo more often.

Flash
Ignite

For summoner spells, Flash is a must on most champions. It also works really well with Leona's abilities. You can flash into the enemy team and use your Shield Of Daybreak to crowd control the enemy and combo that with your Zenith Blade and Solar Flare to stun the enemy champion for a long time. Ignite is a nice way to get that extra little bit of damage with Leona when she is jumping in on the enemy team to try and 'secure' the kill!

Early Game

Leona can struggle against ranged champions early on especially at level 1. The best thing to do at level 1 is to play safe, once you hit level 2 you can use your early combo on the enemies to try and get a good trade or maybe even potentially get an early kill. Once you hit level 5 and have Solar Flare available, you can start to look for more engages on the enemies. You can use your ultimate from range and follow that up with your other crowd control abilities. Make sure when you engage onto the enemy you use Eclipse which will give you a lot of resistance. Leona also has great roaming potential because of her amazing combo. You can go to mid lane and help your team out by trying to get an advantage or maybe even a kill on the enemy mid laner.

Late Game

It's really important as a support to stay with your team! Your job is to try and get your team grouped up for a big team fight, this where you thrive. If you can get a huge combo off on the enemy team or an important target that you need to kill and your team can follow up and kill everyone you can win the game! If this is not possible the best option you have is to stick by your AD carry (Dragon Lane Champion). The AD Carry in your team is one of the main damage sources and keeping he/her alive is really important! Use all your crowd control available to you on the enemy and do your best to stay in your of your AD to keep them safe.

Conclusion

Overall Leona is a super fun champion to play! If you like being at the forefront of engages and being that big front line tank then she is the right champion for you! She can survive for a long time and use her crowd control to win the game.
