How to play Kayle

Kayle is a Baron Lane hyper carry that can build either AD or AP items to deal high amounts of damage. She struggles a lot in the early game because she starts the game as a melee fighter, however, the later the game goes and the more levels she gets, the stronger she becomes thanks to her Divine Ascent. Throughout the game, Kayle will evolve at Level 5, 10 and 15 making her stronger the later the game goes on. As long as you can survive the early game punishment of her being melee, you can scale and become a late-game carry for your team.

Kayle can also be played in the mid lane, make sure to check the alternative build at the top of the page! As Kayle mid, you play the same way as you do in Baron Lane. Both AD or AP build can work in either lane. You can adapt your build to see which one suits you and which one will have more impact on the game.

Kayle's Abilities

Divine Ascent (Passive)

Level 1: Kayle starts as a melee fighter, attacks grant Attack Speed for a few seconds, stacking up to 5 times. Once you reach maximum stacks, Kayle also gains bonus Movement Speed. This is Kayle's weakest form. In the laning phase, you need to stay back and play passive until you reach Level 5.

Level 5: Attack range is increased. You will still be quite weak at this stage of the game, but you will be able to farm a lot safer because your auto attacks will become ranged.

Level 10: Attacks fire waves of flame at max stacks, dealing the passive damage of Starfire Spellblade (3rd Ability). It's important to make sure you stack your auto attacks before you get into a teamfight. This can be done on minions or monsters in the jungle. Once you reach 5 stacks your auto attacks will start to do Area of Effect (AOE) damage making them do a lot more damage.

Level 15: This is Kayle's final form! Attack range is increased and the bonus from reaching max stacks becomes permanent. This means that every auto-attack will do AOE damage. At this point of the game, Kayle will be able to kill anyone that gets in her way.

Radiant Blast (1)

Kayle launches a celestial sword, dealing magic damage. Enemies hit are slowed for a few seconds and their armour and magic resistance are reduced. It's important to make sure you use Radiant Blast before you are auto-attacking enemies. The reduced armour and magic resistance makes a significant difference and helps Kayle deal way more damage.

Celestial Blessing (2)

Kayle heals herself and an allied champion and grants them bonus movement speed for a few seconds. This helps Kayle in the early game if you take too much damage. In the late game, it's important to keep your eyes peeled if your teammates are low on health, or you can speed up an ally to help them get on top of the enemy.

Starfire Spellblade (3)

This ability has a passive which gives Kayle's attacks bonus magic damage. The active empowers her next attack to become ranged and deal bonus magic damage equal to a percentage of the target's missing health.

In the early game, you can use this ability to last hit minions and poke the enemy champion since you start the game in melee form. As you get into the late game, Starfire Spellblade is used to deal a lot more damage and allows your auto attacks to deal AOE damage.

Divine Judgment (Ultimate)

Kayle grants invulnerability to an allied champion or herself for a few seconds. When Kayle activates her ultimate she is unable to auto-attack or use any other abilities so just keep that in mind when using your ultimate.

Once the duration is over, blades rain down around the target, dealing magic damage. Most of the time it's better to use this ability on a front line tank so they can run into the enemy team so the blades can deal plenty of damage.

Kayle Build Breakdown

Nashor's Tooth
Riftmaker
Rabadon's Deathcap
Void Staff
Infinity Orb
Mercury's Treads - Stasis

Kayle does well when building ability power items and some attack damage so she can do as much damage as possible. Nashor's Tooth is a strong item that gives Kayle ability power and attack speed and Kayle's auto attacks deal bonus magic damage. Another great item is Riftmaker. Since Kayle is auto attacking a lot you can stack Riftmaker easily so she can deal bonus true damage.

Onto the runes, we have:

Kraken Slayer

Since Kayle has an insane amount of attack speed she can proc Kraken Slayer multiple times when attacking enemy champions that can help her deal a lot of damage

Hunter - Vampirism

This gives Kayle more ability power and some magical vamp to help keep her alive. When playing Kayle you will always find yourself getting takedowns which will allow you to get AP and magical vamp with each unique takedown.

Bone Plating

As a squishy hyper carry, Kayle will always be the main focus for the enemy team to try and take down. However, Bone Plating will help Kayle take reduced damage from the first three instances of damage which can save her life.

Sweet Tooth

A great rune for when Kayle is low on health or mana in the laning phase and needs some health or mana from the honey fruit. You also get free some free gold.

Flash
Barrier

For summoner spells, Flash is a must on most champions. It’s a great spell to get out of a sticky situation or if you're trying to go in for the killing blow! The go-to 2nd spell is Barrier. The most important thing to note with Barrier is that it does not last a long time so you need to make sure you use it when you are about to take damage.

Early Game

Kayle struggles in the early game because she starts the game as a melee fighter. Your main goal in the early game is to just play safe, don't die and farm as many minions as possible so you can scale and get your items as soon as possible. If this means you need to stay under the tower and miss a few minions, that's fine.

Make sure you use Starfire Spellblade to make your next auto attack ranged so you can farm minions a bit easier, and worse case scenario you can also use Radiant Blast as well.

Late Game

Once you reach the late game, have your core items and Level 10+, this is where Kayle can start dealing a lot of damage and being that late-game hyper carry that you want to be. Not only that but she is really difficult to kill because you will have a lot of vamp to heal you up and your ultimate makes you invulnerable.

It's always best as a Carry to stay grouped with your team. You want to stay as far back from the enemies as possible and allow your front line to go in front of you to tank all the damage. Most of the time you are the main damage output, so if you are caught by yourself and die then your team is in really big trouble. Make sure you stay safe at all times!

Conclusion

Overall Kayle is incredibly fun to play and makes up for her weak early game with an incredibly powerful late game. When playing Kayle make sure you never give up, you can always turn the game around.
